Federico's tower is the emblem of San Miniato. It was built between 1217 and 1223 at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia, King of Sicily and Holy Roman Emperor.

The tower was the keep of the fortification wanted by the Emperor to protect the city of San Miniato. It is about 37 meters high.

During the passage of the front in July 1944 it was mined and destroyed by the German army but 14 years later, in 1958, it was faithfully rebuilt according to its latest forms. The original structure should have ended with a crowning of cylindrical brick columns, following the example of the pinnacles of Sicilian bell towers.
From its summit, an extraordinary 360° panorama can be enjoyed which goes from the roofs and churches of San Miniato to the Valdarno, the Volterra hills, the Apennines and the sea
